Coming back soon!

Hey everyone. As I said in our latest update video I am writing
this to share more details with those of you who want to know. I
have gone back and forth for a while now on whether or not I
was going to write this, but ultimately decided to do it because
we’ve had a ton of people reaching out to find out what’s going
on, where we’ve been, and if we are ok. This is not the easiest
subject to write about, but here goes. We flew back to the states
last July for what was supposed to be the normal 6 month visa
renewal trip where we’d usually take some time to gather boat
gear, see friends and family, and just enjoy a change of pace
for a bit, but things changed abruptly for us when we went to
visit my dad. It was apparent right away that things were not
normal, and that his health had seriously declined. Although I
spoke with my dad fairly often when we were away he’s not one
to talk about that kind of thing because he didn’t want to worry
me or be a “burden” and by the next day things really took a
turn for the worse. I am not going to go into details about his
medical condition, but after an event that took place the day
after we arrived we had to immediately put life on hold, and just
focus only on what needed to be done in the current moment.
Much like a dangerous situation at sea where your mind has to
compartmentalize and prioritize immediate action, and
everything else takes a back seat. Things were very uncertain,
and very complicated for a while. We simply had to step away
from sailing, from Rediviva, and from Salt & Tar without any real
idea of when we’d be able to return. Thankfully, after a couple
months my dads condition did begin to improve with proper
care, but it was also apparent that we needed to stay stateside
to continue that care. Which for us also meant no sailing, no
content, no job, no money…. In order to make ends meet I had
to get a desk job, and believe me going from living on a sailboat
sailing between islands and spearfishing in tropical blue waters
to working a 9-5 is one hell of a culture shock, but it’s also just
what needed to happen. I’m sure it seems a bit strange that we
are writing this on our old blog instead of just saying it all in our

video’s, but it’s a bit complicated because my dad watches our
video’s and the last thing I want is for him to feel guilty or
responsible for us needing to change our lives so dramatically.
Rediviva is safely tucked away in Puerto Escondido. We’ve been
back once to check on her as well as do some maintenance,
and we are trying to make a plan to get back down soon to do a
haulout. As we said in the update video we cannot really make
any big definitive plans yet, but what we can say is that we are
now starting to make moves to get back to Rediviva. We are
also going start putting some videos together again to get Salt &
Tar back up and running. We won’t have enough content right
away to be putting out weekly videos like we used to, so we’re
just gonna start slow. We’ll keep you guys in the loop as we
start to have a more definitive trajectory, and something that
starts to resemble a plan. For the time being though we just
wanted to reach out to let you guys know we’re still here, and
you’ll start to see more of us moving forward.

Talk to ya soon 🙂

  2. So sorry to hear about your dad and his health issues. Unfortunately life doesn’t usually follow our plans. But glad to hear that he’s improving. I’ve been watching your videos since the 3rd episode, and have enjoyed every moment of them. I’ve missed you both, and rediviva for the last year. Take care of yourselves and looking forward to seeing you again.

  3. So glad to see you are both doing ok and are planning on a return. I have followed you from the beginning and look forward to your continued adventures. Take your time, whatever content you can muster will be greatly appreciated, I’m retired and in it for the long haul. I’m sure after a year in the water, Redivia will be in need of a lot of loving care, some major rehab, and I’ll be glad to watch that happen.

  9. Been following you guys for awhile and really like your ship. I’m an old carpenter and would love to do something like that. I respect how you pulled through the years of building your dream. I also respected your decision to stop drinking and wonder if you stuck to it. Not judging because some folks can drink in moderation and that’s OK. I never could be moderate with it myself and in fact it ruined my life for a time. I stopped with God’s help and got on the right road. Don’t be discouraged with your current circumstances as I’m sure it will change soon and you will be back on board your ship soon enough. Best to you guys ! Kevin
